<span style="color: #141414; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large; font-weight: normal;">Derby Coroner's
Court heard how a Breaston man tragically passed away at a friend's house after
consuming too much alcohol. On February 29th Richard Smyth, 55, Originally from
Preston, drank five or six cans of lager before falling to sleep on his
friend's sofa in Long Eaton. When his friend returned he found Mr Smyth
unresponsive and Paramedics were called who pronounced Mr Smyth dead at the
scene. The inquest heard how Mr Smyth, who was divorced and unemployed, had a
history of drink problems and had previously seen a doctor who advised him to
down on alcohol. Acute ethanol intoxication was the medical cause of death. A
postmortem examination revealed that the ethanol concentration showed profound
and potentially fatal intoxication.</span></h2>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Erewash Borough Council is continuing to help
local residents with Council Tax payments due to the challenges being faced
during the coronavirus lockdown. Nearly 4,600 Erewash residents registered on
the Council Tax Support Scheme (CTS) will shortly receive their new bills from
Erewash Borough Council that will include up to £150 of further support towards
their bill thanks to government funding. The support scheme helps households of
working age with low income, whether in work, unemployed or retired. The news
means that just over £460,000 has now been paid, meeting the government’s
target to use the money to help those most in need. In addition, the council is
also working through requests from over 1,000 residents for support with their
Council Tax payments, be it through requests to delay the start of their
payments until June or applications to pay weekly, fortnightly or half-yearly.
Instalments can also be made over 12 months rather than the normal 10.
Councillor Wayne Major, Deputy Leader of Erewash Borough Council and Lead
Member for Resources, says:</span></span></div>

is finding it difficult to make payments to get in touch with us. It is better
to deal with this straight away rather than let problems build up. We
understand the difficult times that many people are facing, so please talk to
us.”</span></span></i><span style="color: black;"></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Hundreds of people have been in touch with
Erewash Borough Council asking to change their Council Tax payment method due
to the difficulties faced with the coronavirus lockdown. Nearly 600 taxpayers
have so far asked for help and want to take advantage of the flexible payment
plans being offered by the council in these difficult times. Residents can ask
to delay their payments until June, while it is also possible to apply to pay
weekly, fortnightly or half-yearly. Instalments can also be stretched over 12
months rather than the usual 10. Councillor Wayne Major, Erewash Borough

A proposal to scrap one hour free parking in Erewash car parks and introduce a simplified two-tier charging system is expected to be sent to Erewash Borough Council’s budget setting meeting next month. If agreed, the new charges would see drivers pay just £1 for up to three hours and £3 for any period over three hours. The change would not affect rates at the commuter car park at Long Eaton Railway Station. The suggested change is included in a report going to Council Executive next week (18 February), with councillors expected to give it the green light to go to Full Council for a final decision. The council has carried out an extensive review of charges in its car parks and while the free parking has been popular, it is relatively costly and arguably has not encouraged longer stays in the town, potentially restricting shopping and other opportunities. The budget proposals report outlines the tough financial challenges facing the council. Councillor Michael Powell, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Regeneration and Planning, says: “This move, if agreed, will encourage people to stay longer in Ilkeston and Long Eaton town centres. We believe a simplified two-price system will work well and that the new rates are fair and compare favourably to charges in other local authority areas.” Additional income generated from the changes would help the council meet the long term costs of maintaining and upgrading the car parks. The meeting of Council Executive is at Long Eaton Town Hall on Tuesday 18th February at 10.30am. The budget-setting Full Council meeting is at Ilkeston Town Hall on Thursday 5th March at 7pm.</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"> Ashby Aero
On Monday 2nd October the members of the Rotary Club
of Church Wilne welcomed Martin Ashby who gave an
insight to his business Ashby Interiors with his talk
“Creative use of Aero Parts” The business is split 40/60
white glass lights and aero items. They have around 250
pieces of lights in stock and many are Art Deco which
are mainly sold into London but they have recently
received orders from Derby which they hope to expand
upon in the near future.
The business moved into Aerospace three years ago and
they take aero salvage and transform them into luxury
items such as lighting, mirrors and furniture. Martin
spoke about some of the items converted which included
items from WW11, the Spitfire, Hurricane Aircraft,
Russian Mig fighter plane and Concorde.
One recent project was on a Rolls-Royce Dart engine
which he polished for 70 hours and it is now in Australia.
Other recent successes include the sale of a Rolls-Royce
Derwent engine, a Merlin engine which was stripped
down into small pieces as a lot of people want a small
piece of history, a search light from a wooden fishing
boat and a Bren Gun. The business now ships many
historical pieces world wide and Martin concluded by
saying it is a pleasure to restore, polish and convert so
many items. The club’s vote of thanks was given by Steve Street who
said “it was a fascinating subject, with many items that
we can all remember”</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"> A man has been jailed for 9
months for fraud after taking
£4,450 for work he did not carry
out. Frederick Buck, 22, of Castle
View, Newark, called at a house in
Draycott and asked the occupier if
she wanted her conifers and trees
cutting back. She agreed and paid
him £250 but this soon became
£450. He then offered to do more
work and drove her to the Lloyds
Bank in Long Eaton three times on
the same day where she withdrew
a total of £4,000. He took the
money but did none of the work.
He was arrested a month later
after police traced his van. He
pleaded guilty to fraud.</span></div>

<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">A cut-price half term Junior Swim Membership is on offer for the October school holiday following the success of Erewash Borough Council’s similar summer package. The membership offers nine days swimming for just £5 and the council has made 60 memberships available – 30 at Ilkeston’s Victoria Park Leisure Centre and 30 and West Park Leisure Centre in Long Eaton. The half term membership - which runs from 21st-29th October inclusive - has been funded by Sport England and is for 11-16-year-olds as part of Sport England’s campaign to encourage young people to be more fit and healthy. The memberships are available to buy now from both leisure centres and also include entrance to two Halloween pool parties at Victoria Park Leisure Centre in Ilkeston on Saturday 28th October. Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says: “Our summer special proved extremely popular so we are grateful to Sport England for helping us return with this half term offer as part of our ongoing commitment to get young people physically active – particularly in this 11-16-year-old age range.”</span></span></h3>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;"><b> Breaston Ladies Conservative Coffee Club</b></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><br />Our September speaker was Dot O’Brien Dot and her husband had been trekking in Nepal for 14 years and decided to help the Nepalese in a village called Mirge where there was no electricity, poor water supply and very poor conditions. Mirge is very remote, 5 miles from Katmandhu and the road is dreadful, un-tarmacked and very stony. The countryside is mountainous and very beautiful but the roads are often impassable in monsoon weather. We were told about the family unit they decided to help who understood English well but wouldn’t speak it. The homes of some of the families are very basic and the whole family work very hard on the land in various ways, even the old people. The father of the family they helped earns 80p per day quarrying slate whilst the women grind millet to make flour. Many men work in the trekking industry. It is a poor subsistence and a cashless society with people swapping their goods to enable a living. Women wear nose jewellery to indicate their married status. After the earthquake in 2015 the school, health centre and nearly all of the houses and other buildings were left unusable and the army were allocated one week in the village to clear the rubble. No help was given to rebuild so Dot and her husband helped fundraise for a new school and health centre. In the meantime, people were sleeping in tents provided by the Red Cross and children were being taught in tin shelters. Some children walk for 2 hrs each way to get to school and back. There is no health and safety out there for building workers, who were seen balancing on scaffolding in flip flops and wearing only sunglasses to protect their eyes whilst welding. A young man who they funded to train as a pharmacist in China does everything from helping in childbirth to sewing on a severed finger. Midwives have been provided with their own special equipment bags which contain only a plastic sheet and a razor blade. Our next talk on Wednesday 18th October is ‘A potted history of the garden’ by Julia Powell 9-45am The Navigation Inn, Risley Lane, Breaston. New members welcome.</span></div>
