Breaston and Draycott Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team seek watchful neighbours

The Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team in Breaston and Draycott is encouraging members of the community to join them in setting up and getting involved in Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) schemes.

NHW schemes are managed by community volunteers to meet the needs of their members. They are supported by local Safer Neighbourhood Policing Teams and act as an important partner by promoting crime prevention and sharing information about suspicious activity. NHW provides piece of mind to local residents, helps reduce fear of crime by passing on information and can act as a deterrent against crime and anti-social behaviour.

PCSO Karen Pykett said: “Breaston and Draycott is a very safe place to live but we all have a responsibility to help prevent crime. There had previously been a thriving NHW scheme in the area.

“This is a very proactive and community-minded village. We are working with the community and the parish council to rejuvenate NHW and continue the excellent work that has been done previously in the area.”

WHEELIE BIN ROBBERY

A robbery took place at a house on Nottingham Road Borrowash on Saturday January 28th. The incident occurred at approximately 7.30pm. A 91 year old woman answered a knock on the door and a man told her that his dog had knocked over her wheelie bin. He took her to show her what had happened and when she returned she found another man in the house. They made off with a gold chain. The man who called at the door was in his 40s.

WORK EXTENDED

Work to replace a water main on Breaston/Risley Lane has been extended. The work which started on January 9th is now due to be completed on February 17th. Local residents that have spoken to the Extra are concerned that this work and work on the sewers on Hills Road Estate is a precursor to development on the old Western Mere Site. Western Mere Secondary School was established in 1957 and was closed in 1990. After demolition in 1992 the site was used as a grazing area for horses.

POLICE WARNING IN BORROWASH

Police are urging residents to secure their vehicles after a number of thefts in the Borrowash and Ockbrook area. Thefts from cars have risen in the last month with Sat Nav’s in particular being stolen from glove compartments. PCSO Matthew Boyer from Borrowash and Ockbrook Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “We are urging the public to ensure that their vehicles are locked at all times and not to leave valuables on display.

“Do not hide anything in your glove compartment; if a thief does get into your car, this will be the first place they look. If you have a Sat Nav please remember to wipe the windscreen after you have removed it so as not to leave a mark where the holder has been placed. The Safer Neighbourhood team is currently providing residents with crime prevention advice, a leaflet has been designed entitled ‘lock it or lose it’ which provides simple tips on how to prevent your vehicle from being a target.”

MAN INJURED IN DRAYCOTT CRASH

Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious road collision at approximately 8:05pm on Sunday January 1st. The collision occurred on the A6005 Draycott Road just outside Draycott. A silver VW Lupo collided with a cyclist travelling in the direction of Borrowash and failed to stop.

The car was later found in Borrowash and a 22-year-old man, who is suspected to be the driver, was arrested in connection with the incident. He has been questioned and bailed while further enquiries are made. The cyclist, a 43-year-old local man, who was riding a white bicycle received serious leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the witness appeal line on 01773 572929.

OCKBROOK INVASION

An intrigued environmental protection officer at Erewash Borough Council sprang into action when he received a strange call for help . . . Ockbrook had been

‘invaded’ by some mysterious yellow blobs! On arriving in the village, two baffled residents told him their front lawns and nearby fields were covered in what looked like scrambled eggs.

The officer suspected man-made material like polyurethane insulation foam had been dumped in the area – but on arrival discovered the ‘scrambled egg’ was definitely something natural.

Detective work quickly identified it as

Fuligo Septica, which has the unpleasant common name of ‘dog’s vomit slime mould’ and usually grows on mulch and compost, although it can also grow directly on plants. The species was reportedly the inspiration for the Steve McQueen movie The Blob. Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for the Environment, says:

“It was certainly an unusual call and we can quite understand why residents would be baffled about the outbreak of strange yellow blobs! Our officer discovered numerous patches of the slime mould – some up to a foot in diameter. Slime mould is completely harmless to people, pets and plants and, while there is little that can be done about an ‘infestation’, it does usually disappear in the cold and dry winter weather.”

Slime moulds are not fungi, plants, animals or bacteria, but are a completely different kind of organism. The bright yellow appearance in Ockbrook is just one stage of the life cycle which sees the slime mould as a plasmodium formed when two spores merge and begin dividing into a large creeping blob of protoplasm surrounded by a single membrane.

The plasmodium moves by gradually engulfing and consuming fungi and bacteria that are present on decaying plant matter. As they dry out, slime moulds turn white and form a mass of spores.

Travellers Rests – Pink Friday

A cheque was presented to the Derby Breast Unit at Derby Royal by Rose Allen and friends following a successful fund raising event at the Travellers Rest in Draycott. Rose has been successfully treated by the doctors and nurses of the Breast Unit and wanted to raise some money as her way of saying thank you. “I know quite a few ladies that have been treated by the unit and there are a few of us that meet up at the Travellers” said Rose. “We all wanted to find a way of saying a big thank you to the staff at the unit – they do a great job! The night itself was wonderful and to see so many people in the pub wearing pink was brilliant.” she added.

The Pink Friday team, as they called them selves, managed to obtain donations from a number of local businesses as well from friends and relatives. The event at the pub raised £800 through a mixture of raffles, games, pink cocktails. Dave Rieley, the landlord of the recently reopened Travellers Rest commented “It was a great night to raise money for a local cause and we are all grateful for all the support provided we all hope that the great work of the unit continues.”

Kerry Brady of the Derby Hospitals Charity said “It is wonderful that Rose, her friends and the Travellers Rest have put on the event to raise money to continue the work of the Derby Breast Unit. We are grateful for their support”

Erewash tree wardens are leading a tree walk around Breaston on Saturday 15th October at 2pm (lasting approximately 2 hours), to learn how to identify some of the trees in our village. FIELD BLAZE

Firemen were called to a blaze in a field on Borrowash Road, Spondon. The alarm was raised at 1.15pm on Friday September 2nd. A spokesman said:- “About 200 square metres of scrubland was on fire and firefighter were on the scene an hour. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.”

DRAYCOTT COLLISION

Three vehicles were involved in a collision in Draycott on August 30th. The incident occurred at 6pm and involved a Renault, a Mercedes Van and an LDV drop side lorry. The driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. One man received facial injuries and was treated at the scene.

RIVER RESCUE

A canoeist who went to help a stranded sheep stuck near the River Derwent ended up being rescued himself. Firemen were called to Wilne Road, Draycott, after the canoeist, who was in his mid-20s, called 999 and then went into the river.

Fire Crews from Kingsway and Derby, and a further crew from Long Eaton, arrived to find both the man and sheep in need of rescue. A spokesman said that while trying to lift the animal the man had became exhausted.

BAG THEFT

A handbag and contents were taken from a car parked in Nottingham Road, Draycott. The theft took place after the articles were left on show.

MOTOR CYCLE IN COLLISION

A collision took place between a car and a motorcycle on Breaston Lane, Risley. The accident occurred at 7.40am on September 5th. The motor cyclist who was riding a Honda 125 was treated at the scene and later taken to QMC with a suspected facial fracture. The driver of the car, a Ford Focus, was uninjured. An Air Ambulance was in attendance.

BREASTON VILLAGE WALK

Walk number 6 takes place on Wednesday September 21^st. This walk will form part of the Erewash Walking Festival and will last about 3hours over 5miles. Leaving Breaston over the Millenium Footpath to join the Midshires Way and towards Draycott Village. As in previous years, a visit to 49 Lime Grove, Draycott will be included in support of MacMillan Breast Cancer week before returning via the Coffin Walk. BREASTON MAY DAY GALA

2nd May 2011

May Day Bank holiday wouldn’t be a holiday without Breaston May Day Gala, especially on the Royal Wedding weekend as we will have our very own Gala Prince or Princess. The bunting will be out for a fabulous day which will include a historical re-enactment, maypole dancing, dog show, tug-of-war, children’s races, punch and judy and loads more of traditional events and stalls. In fact everything needed for a fabulous day.

VILLAGE WALKS
Breaston Parish Council have organised six short walks around the footpaths of Breaston village for the summer of 2011. They are approximately once a month the first being on Wednesday April 13th.

The walk begins at 10.30am, starts outside the Parish Council Meeting Room on Blind Lane and will last around one and a half hours. The route will be:- Breaston towards Risley with an option for a coffee break at Lanes and return via the completed Risley Lane footpath.

HORSE DEATH

Police are appealing for information after a horse was found dead in a Derbyshir field. A shed was broken into in the field in Wilne Road at Draycott between midday Saturday December 4th and 10am on Sunday December 5th 2010. It is thought someone has then taken dry sugarbeet from the shed and fed it to the horse, a white Welsh pony named Ebony. The feed needs to be soaked in water for 24 hours before it is given to animals as it absorbs moisture and swells- if dry beet is fed to a horse it can lead to bloating causing its gut to strech and in some cases burst proving fatal. PC Tom Craig, of Long Eaton police, said:

“It is a highly unusual incident and we think that whoever who has done this though they were being nice to the horse but unwittingly their actions have ended up with it being killed. We’d appeal for anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the area to get in touch. We’d also ask for people to be aware about this incident to prevent a similar thing from happening again. The family who own Ebony are very upset by what has happened.”

DRAYCOTT FLASHER

Police have released an e-fit of a man who exposed himself to a 13 year old girl on Lime Grove, Draycott, at about 7.10am on Wednesday October 13th. The girl who was on a paper round for local Newsagent Sues News saw the man who was initially facing some bushes but then he turned round and exposed himself to her. He tried to engage her in conversation and she walked away.

The girl has worked with the police to create the Evo-fit of the suspect. He is described as being white, 35-42 years-old, between 5ft 8-9ins tall and of medium build. He had dark messy hair, dark eyes and a slightly chubby face. He was wearing a black short sleeved polo shirt and dark jeans or combat style trousers.

Flu Jabs at the Overdale Medical practice will take place at the Breaston and Borrowash surgeries on Saturday 23rd October between 9 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. No appointment is necessary.

Road Closure on Risley Lane. The long-awaited footway will begin next month so Rilsey Lane will be closed during November, December, January and February. Access will be maintained wherever possible but diversions will be in place through Draycott.

Breaston W.I. is holding a Charity Quiz night for teams of four at Erewash Valley Golf Club on Friday 22nd October. Entry fee is £40 per team, which includes a hot buffet. Entry forms are available from Doreen on 873149.

Erewash VIP's (visually impaired people) meet at the Breaston Methodist Church Hall on Blind Lane from 2pm - 4pm on Wednesdays (not the second Wednesday of the month). This is for regd visually impaired, (blind or partially sighted).

SPEED WATCH SCHEME

Children from Ashbrook Junior School have been working alongside their local Safer Neighbourhood officers to take a new approach to slowing down speeding drivers. The Junior Speed Watch scheme involves young people using the laser speed gun to monitor the traffic. When a vehicle is found to be breaking the limit, it is pulled over by a police officer and the children talk to the driver about the reasons they were speeding so close to a school and how they would feel if they were to hit a child.

PC Andy Bircumshaw, Safer Neighbourhood Youth Officer, said: “Victoria Avenue is the road outside Ashbrook Junior School and it has a 30mph limit, or 20mph at school run times. There is also an infant school and nursery in the same area, so it is incredibly important that drivers are careful and observe the speed limit.

Ellie Brooke, a local resident and mum of two children attending the schools on Victoria Avenue said:

“I think this is an absolutely fantastic project and it will benefit the community as a whole in helping to slow down drivers and keep our children safe. I often see parents speeding into school when their children are late and I hope that this project will remind all drivers where the brake pedal is.”

CAR DAMAGED
A car parked in Meadow Close, Draycott, was badly damaged on Saturday evening. The rear window was smashed and the boot lid dented, they also damaged the roof by jumping on it. Would anyone having any knowledge of the perpetrators please ring crimestoppers.

BREASTON FLOWER CIRCLE
Breaston Flower Circle met on Tuesday 28th September when Pauline Foster came to demonstrate “Colours of my Mind” Pauline came to us from Lincolnshire and has been flower arranging since the age of 21.

Pauline’s many displays showed her love of colour and each one was a different style, from the art Deco and Art Nouveau periods to the very modern using flowers from the very humble chrysanthemum to the exotic orchids and anthuriums. A lovely evening was enjoyed by a large audience.

Our next meeting on 26th October will be our own Marion Stokes demonstrating “Its that time of year again” to be held at the Breaston Methodist Centre commencing 7.25p.m. On 16th November we will be holding our Christmas Demonstration at The Wilsthorpe Business and Enterprise College on Derby Road, in Long Eaton at 7.30p.m. Tickets are £5 and available from 0115 9393571

BREASTON MAN DIES FOLLOWING OPERATION
An inquest at Derby Coroner's Court recorded a narrative verdict after a Breaston man died following an operation. Colin Shepherd, 73, of Belmont Avenue, Breaston, had surgery at Royal Derby Hospital in March but died the following day. Mr Shepherd had surgery to improve the blood flow in his legs but medical staff did not realise that an artery had been accidentally split during the operation. Louise Pinder, Derby and South Derbyshire deputy coroner, said: "It was an unforeseen and unexpected complication."

Breaston Flower Circle will hold an open meeting on Tuesday 27th July at Wilsthorpe Business and Enterprise College. The meeting starts at 7.30pm. and the demonstration is entitled “Seeds of Creation” by Mr Bob Harris of Gloucestershire. Tickets will be available on the door at £5.00. Therewill be a raffle for the flowers, and various stalls. All are welcome.

WEATHER GIRL AT GARDEN PARTY
A charity strawberry and cream tea garden party in Breaston has raised more than £1,200 for Treetops Hospice. Guest of honour ITV weather presenter Lucy Kite was among 160 guests supporting the event, which took place at the home of John and Shirley Walker. Lucy said, "I had a fantastic afternoon. We enjoyed some beautiful sunshine, yummy refreshments, lots of shopping and some serious fundraising.”

Kate Shaw, for Treetops, said the afternoon was a great success.

Treetops, in Derby Road, Risley, provides palliative care for people with life-limiting illnesses such as end-stage cancer.

EIGHT NEW HOMES IN THE VILLAGE
Wilmark Ltd plan to build eight houses on land in Breaston they also wants to create a private drive on the site, located behind houses in Mount Street. They are waiting for the all clear from Erewash Borough Council. Agent Paul Gaughan said, “The development will have little effect on neighbouring dwellings."

CORONERS VERDICT
A Breaston man who developed asbestosis and died, became exposed to asbestos while working for both the Royal Navy and British Celanese. Joseph Cooper, 78, of Belmont Avenue was a sailor for 12 years, as well as working as an apprentice joiner at Celanese in Spondon.

Derby and South Derbyshire Coroner's Court returned a verdict of death due to industrial disease. Assistant deputy coroner, Paul McCandless, said he was satisfied from the evidence that during Mr Cooper's working life he was "regularly exposed to asbestos above the normal background level."

CHILD STAR
Molly Windsor a 12 year old actress from Breaston will appear in cinemas later this year. In the film Oranges and Sunshine she plays Rachel, daughter of Margaret Humphreys, a former Nottingshire County Council employee, who blew the whistle on how children were forcibly shipped off to distant parts of the Empire in the 1940s and 1950s. Molly said: "It's a really exciting time for me and I'm really enjoying it."

Molly starred in Channel 4's The Unloved, which was directed by British Hollywood star Samantha Morton and won a Bafta as best single drama.

DRAYCOTT TOURNAMENT
Draycott’s Emma Richardson was the star of the show as Draycott table tennis centre staged its first one star tournament. Over 50 youngsters competed and Emmas enterprising attacking play ensured that she came out on top in two gruelling round robin events claiming both the cadet and junior girls titles.

Draycott junior Dom Waldock won the consolation event in the boys cadets but Amy Humphreys had to settle for runner-up after reaching the final of the Under-13s.

RACE AGAINST TIME
Draycott cycling star Nikki Harris is aiming to win a race against time to be fit for Britain's National Road Race Championship. Nikki is recovering rapidly from a torn tendon in her arm, sustained in her first big race of the season.

Now back home in Draycott recuperating she said:

"My legs felt good. After 30km, I punctured, but that was no big deal. After a wheel change, I was straight back on the bunch and felt comfortable and pretty strong. I moved my way up and got on the front with a kilometre-and-a-half to go. Then, with just under a kilometre to go, I went round a corner, a girl came out wide, hit my front wheel and the only place I could go was into a concrete central reservation. I went over the bars and landed really heavily.”

Hopefully she will be ready for the national road race championships in Pendle, Lancashire, on Sunday, June 27th.

A three-car collision in Draycott led to a post box being knocked over. The incident occurred at the junction of Draycott Road and The Crescent just before 6pm on Thursday June 17th. Three Toyota cars were involved in the collision, with one vehicle crashing into the post box and knocking it over. Emergency services were called but no one was hurt.

MISSING
Police searching for 66-year-old Pauline Gregory have re-appealed for information following sighting of her on Saturday May 29. Ms Gregory was reported missing from a nursing home in Borrowash on Friday May 28. She was seen at the bus stop on Chestnut Grove, Borrowash at 9.30am and was thought to be going to the Westfield Centre in Derby.

Officers who have been working closely with the local bus companies have discovered CCTV footage of Ms Gregory getting off a Red Arrow bus in the Victoria Centre in Nottingham at 8.39am on Saturday May 29. She then got back on the Red Arrow and returned to Derby arriving at 9.32am

She was wearing a black suit type jacket, a light coloured shirt and black trousers. She was carrying a black handbag and a carrier bag. Her hair is cut in a short bob style.
Officers have increased their presence in the Westfield Centre in an attempt to find Ms Gregory.

HOUSING PLANS SCRAPPED
The new Con-Lib coalition Government has confirmed that it plans to scrap regional spatial strategies across the UK and return decision-making to local authorities. Councils in Derby, South Derbyshire, Erewash and Amber Valley had been told by the previous Labour Government that they must build 36,600 new homes in the next 16 years.

Sites earmarked for potential development had included Breaston where 150 new homes were to be built at the former Western Mere School on Hind Avenue. Breaston resident Margaret McCaig, of Wilsthorpe Road, said:

"The decision to scrap housing targets is the best thing that's happened. It would have had a huge impact. We already have the biggest primary school in Erewash and it's practically full as it is. It simply would be unable to cope with another huge intake. Parking at the school is already a nightmare – can you imagine a whole new estate and the impact that would have had?

I'm a big believer in local people knowing what's best for the local area. How can people in Brussels or Westminster know what's best for here? Breaston is a village and we wish it to remain that way. What we don't want is a sprawl – if we start sprawling bit by bit, the next thing that happens is we've been connected up to Borrowash. Hearing that the new coalition Government is planning to scrap the housing requirements is wonderful."

DRAYCOTT CYCLING CLASSES

Officers form the Breaston and Draycott Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team are helping young cyclists to be safer on the roads by offering a series of cycling proficiency classes. The classes, which began this week, are being held every Monday afternoon for young people at Draycott Community Primary School.

PCSO Karen Pyket said:
"We have six sessions planned with the children to teach them the basics of road safety so that they can come to school on their bikes.The first few sessions will take place on the school playground and we will look at things such as signalling to traffic and being aware of other vehicles on the road or pedestrians on the pavement. When the children are ready, we will then start cycling on quiet roads in the area so that they can practice what they've learnt. As well as gaining cycling skills the children will also learn the importance of safety equipment, such as a helmet and lights, and we will look at the key areas of good bike maintenance."

"The cycling proficiency classes began around three years ago and we usually run one set of six sessions in spring and another set towards the end of summer.We hope that these classes will encourage children to be safe on the roads and to enjoy a healthy hobby into adulthood."

Residents, scouts, cadets and local councillors were among those who joined forces with Erewash Borough Council's Pride in Erewash Campaign on Saturday April 24th, to take part in a litter pick around Draycott. More than 30 volunteers spent the morning on the community tidy-up - with the clean-up squad featuring local residents, Derbyshire Army Cadets (Draycott Detachment), 1st Draycott and Wilnes Scout Group, Draycott Women's Institute and members of the local Parish Council.

CANAL PLANS PUT FORWARD

Multi million pound plans to rebuild the entire 12-and-a-half-mile stretch of The Derby and Sandiacre Canal have been put forward by The Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust. The Canal would run between the Trent and Mersey Canal at Swarkestone and the Erewash Canal at Sandiacre and public meetings have been set up at locations along the route.

Three of these meeting are in the Draycott and Breaston area, they are:.

St Hugh's Church Hall, Borrowash, on Tuesday, March 23rd and Blind Lane Scout Hut, Breaston, on Tuesday, March 30th.

The trust aims to start and complete the restoration within the next 20 years and their plans include a new marina on the 10-acre Acordis landfill site in Megaloughton Lane, Spondon, which has been derelict since 1960. This site will include 250 homes, bars, cafes, restaurants and a hotel.

This small section of the Derby Canal is where it joins the Erewash Canal at Sandiacre lock.

Two Long Eaton roads are to close for repairs. Details of the Christmas and New Year bin collections in Erewash are listed on stickers which are now being placed on all household bins by Erewash Borough Council refuse collectors. A Tattoo studio could be opened in Borrowash. Kate Appleton has applied to Erewash Borough Council for permission to turn a former estate agents in Nottingham Road into a tattoo shop. Opening hours would be from 9am until 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

BORROWASH GO CART CRUSHED
A go-kart has been confiscated by the Borrowash and Ockbrook Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team after the driver was caught illegally using the vehicle on the road. The go-kart was seized on Hawthorne Avenue, Borrowash after a resident reported the issue to the local policing teamPCSO Claire March said:

“This vehicle was being driven on the road in a residential area, as well as causing a noise nuisance to people living in the community. We confiscated the vehicle because it was being driven on the road and the owner had no insurance, meaning that an immediate seizure was carried out. Under some circumstances a release fee can be paid and the vehicle can be returned to its owner, but due to the fact that this go-kart was being used on the road it will now be crushed and the metal will be recycled.”

Sue Bilbie of Shirley Crescent, Breaston, has retired after 44 years at Parry’s in Draycott. She started work on the reception in 1965 at the age of 16 and was punctual from day one. She was presented with a stainless steel clock bearing the words, “Sue Bilbie 44 years at Parry. Never late.”

The 60-year-old was presented with the gift at a surprise leaving party and buffet. She said “I always thought it was important to be punctual.”.

POLICE SEEK VANDALS
Police in Long Eaton are seeking teenagers who were involved in damaging 15 cars in Breaston on Tuesday September 8th between 9pm and 10pm. One teenager was detained after cars had windows smashed in Longmoor Lane, Orchard Close, Maxwell Street and Blind Lane. Anyone with information should call 0345 123 3333.

VICS CRASH OUT OF THE CUP
After Saturdays 0-0 draw, Borrowash crashed out of the FA Cup in Tuesday nights replay going down 4-1 at Unibond side Quorn. Manager Mark Wilson said.

“On Saturday they did not have one shot on target so to lose in that manner giving them a three goal head start after 10 minutes is a joke, the back four and goalkeeper were not up to it and that is a concern, we missed key players and it showed, people who can look after the ball and create problems for the opposition.”

BLUES STRIKER JOINS BORROWASH

Earlier this week Long Eaton United confirm that Lee Sutton has moved to Borrowash Vics on loan. Lee scored 14 goals last term including 4 in the FA Vase. If he gets a good run he will prove a valuable asset.
Borrowash drew 2-2 at Greenwood Meadows on Tuesday evening with two goals from Jamie Pawley. This follows a 3-1 win away at Holwell Sports (Pawley, Summerfield 2).
Borrowash are at home on Saturday against Quorn FC in the FA Cup ko 3pm.

WASTE DUMPED IN BORROWASH

Erewash Borough Council Neighbourhood Wardens are on the lookout for a fly-tipper responsible for dumping hazardous waste containers, complete with remnants of chemicals, by the side of a footpath in Borrowash. The containers were discovered by an Environment Agency Officer and were found to hold chemicals used in electroplating and metal finishing, narrowing down the range of possible culprits.

Neighbourhood Wardens and the Environment Agency are now investigating where the containers could have come from. Scott Cartledge, Neighbourhood Warden Service Team Leader, said:

“This is certainly a more serious incident of fly-tipping. Chemicals such as this are not termed ‘hazardous waste’ for nothing. Being dumped by the side of a footpath too, represents a danger to the general public. Children and dogs can be particularly at risk in cases like this. We would urge the general public to come forward with any information they may have that could lead us to a conviction.”

The containers left were mostly blue in colour, with a couple of translucent containers as well. They also had distinctive black and white chemical stickers on them.

DRAYCOTT MAN ASSAULTED
A Draycott man was was punched in the face during an argument in the centre of Ilkeston. The assault took place at 4.15pm on Monday July 20th in the Market Place.
The 36-year-old man received facial injuries. An 18-year-old man was later arrested by police.

BREASTON BUNGAHIGH
Erewash Borough Council’s planning committee have decided that major changes will not have to be made to a bungalow in Church View, Breaston, despite objections by four neighbours. Councillors were told that the extra height, (3 feet higher than planning permission allows) was needed due to changes in building work. Neighbours claim the higher roof was out of keeping with the area and wanted the bungalow reduced in size.
But the planning committee decided to allow the bungalow to stay the same. Councillor JohnFrudd said: “I think this is a genuine oversight.”

HEDGE AND GARDEN SHEDS DESTROYED

Police are appealing for information after a hedge and two sheds were destroyed by fire on Sunday June 14. The fire was reported at 8.20pm and started on Draycott Park. It spread to trees and a hedge at the bottom of a garden on Mapleton Road, Draycott. It then spread up the garden and destroyed a two garden sheds too. A witness reported seeing four people on push bikes riding off from the scene of the fire. All four were wearing hooded tops, two of the tops were black, one was red and the fourth was white. One of the bikes was a mountain-type and had a row of red reflectors on the saddle.

Ten trees, 12 feet tall, owned by the local parish council, were damaged. PC Jonathan Reeves from the Breaston and Draycott Safer Neighbourhood Team, has appealed for anyone else who has information to contact him on 0345 123 33 33.

FATAL CRASH AT BORROWASH
A woman was killed on Friday night when her car left the road and crashed. The accident happened on the A52 near Borrowash. The 51-year-old Derby woman was driving a silver Peugeot 206. Two other women passengers were injured. Witnesses are asked to call Derbyshire Police on 01773 572929.

VICIOUS ATTACK IN SPONDON
Two teenagers boys were attacked and robbed between 9.15pm and 10.15pm on Friday, June 5th. The two boys aged 16 and 13 were walking along West Road, near West Park School, when they were approached by a group of about 15 youths. They were punched and kicked and the 16-year-old had his mobile phone taken. He suffered a swollen jaw and bruising to his head. The younger boy sustained a black eye, two fractures to his jaw and two broken teeth. Anyone with information about the incident should call police on 0345 123 3333

ASHBROOK SCHOOL PARKING
The Borrowash and Ockbrook Safer Neighbourhood Team is holding a meeting to discuss parking issues around Ashbrook School on Victoria Avenue, Borrowash.The school is the site of various incidents of dangerous and inconsiderate parking. Many cars are left too close to the junctions of Deans Drive and Kimberley Road, causing obstructions for other traffic. Other parking issues in the area have included problems around the crossing patrol and complaints about cars parked on the grass verges.

The meeting will be held on Monday, 15th June at Ockbrook Parish Hall on Church Street, starting at 7pm. The Safer Neighbourhood team would like to encourage local residents to come along to the meeting and have their say.

WOMAN DIES AFTER FALL ON BUS

.An elderly woman died after falling over on a bus in Draycott. It is thought that the woman fell from her seat onto the floor, witnesses are urged to contact police. The bus a Trent Barton Indigo, was travelling from Nottingham to Derby via Long Eaton. The incident occured at Station Road, Draycott, at 11am on Thursday May 7th. The woman was assisted by fellow passengers and an ambulance was called to the scene. The woman was taken to the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary where she later died as a result of her injuries.

BODY FOUND IN BORROWASH HOUSE.
The body of a 46 year old man was discovered at a house in Peveril Avenue, Borrowash on Friday May 1st. A police spokesman said, “It was found at around 8.15am. There appears to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.”
His name has not been given as relatives have not yet been informed of his death.

Safer Neighbourhood team targets home security in Breaston

Safer Neighbourhood officers in Breaston and Draycott have recently visited residents on Longmoor Lane to offer home security advice.PC Jonathan Reeves and PCSO Karen Pyket worked alongside Community Wardens from Erewash Borough Council to visit approximately 150 houses on Longmoor Lane, Breaston during the 19th and 20th March.
The team talked to residents about security issues and gave away shed packs, window vibration alarms and door stopper alarms to help people protect their property.The team made the home visits as part of their Safer Neighbourhood Priority Profile to reduce burglary and crime in the Longmoor Lane area.PC Reeves and PCSO Pyket are also helping to set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in the area. The launch meeting will be held on Thursday, 9th April, 7:30pm at the scout hut on The Green in Breaston.

HAVE A GO GRANDFATHER MOWED DOWN
In August 2008, Barry Granger was left fighting for his life after being run over twice by a man who had burgled his house in Breaston. Craig Morrell, 32, and teenager Nathan O'Connor both of of Whiteley Close, Stapleford appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday March 13th . The incident occurred on August 27th 2008. Pauline Granger shouted to her husband Barry (61) after chasing Morrell out of their house, in Stevens Lane, Breaston.
Morrell got into a Renault Megane which had been stolen in a burglary days earlier, and Mr Granger reached in to stop him escaping. He was knocked to the floor as the car moved off. Nottingham Crown Court were told that Morrell then reversed over him, crushing Mr Granger's back and shoulder. He then drove over him again as he sped off leaving him with four broken bones in his right shoulder, a severe ankle fracture, two collapsed lungs and the need for life-saving surgery.
After the incident Morrell carried on driving with the driver's side door open before abandoning the car nearby. He then told his passenger, Nathan O'Connor, to wipe the car clean. Morrell admitted burglary, wounding with intent and dangerous driving.
He was jailed for eight years for grievous bodily harm with intent, and two years consecutively for aggravated burglary.
Passing sentence Judge Philip Head said: "What you did was violent and callous."
Nathan O'Connor, 17, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and was given a two-year community punishment.

LONG EATON OPERATIC SOCIETY

Founded in 1955 the Long Eaton Operatic Society have been presenting shows for 54 years. After the success of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ earlier this year the Society are pleased to announce that their next musical ’Pickwick’ will open at May Hall, Trent College, on Tuesday October 27th. The show will run until October 31st with evening performances at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

The show promises to be a pre-Christmas treat, with all the various characters and settings that Dickens wrote about so eloquently, and with Sam Barson as Pickwick, singing such memorable songs as "That's what I'd like for Christmas" and "If I ruled the world", the audience will come out of the theatre with a spring in their step and a smile on their face.

BROWN BIN COLLECTIONS

Erewash residents are into their final month of compost collections as the brown bin rounds for garden rubbish come to an end in November. Erewash Borough Council confirmed the dates for the last 2009 compost collections this week and the details are:

North of the Borough
Ilkeston, Stanley, Cotmanhay, Kirk Hallam, West Hallam, Stanley Common and Little Eaton. Last week of collection is 16th-20th November.

South of the Borough
Long Eaton, Draycott, Dale Abbey, Sandiacre, Sawley, Stanton-by-Dale, Borrowash, Ockbrook, Risley, Breaston and Breadsall. Last week of collection is 23rd-27th November.

When the garden waste collections have ended, Erewash residents can once again use their brown bins, instead of the green bags, for their recycling waste. Recycling items do not have to be separated, but can instead be ‘mixed’ and put into the bin throughout the winter. Once garden waste collections re-start in the Spring of next year, brown bins must not be used for recycling. Details of the dates when these collections resume will be announced in February.
